A South African family is desperate to remain in the US, its members claiming they cannot return home because, as Afrikaners, they will be subject to racial discrimination.

The family's legal representative has been contacting US academics in a bid to get a scholarly opinion that would bolster the asylum application.

The family, described by the law firm as "white Afrikaner farmers", is among dozens of South Africans who, over the past decade, have applied for asylum abroad for a range of reasons, including fear of persecution and violent crime. Some of the applications have been successful.

When contacted for comment, the family's lawyer, Rehim Babaoglu, said the family was too afraid to be identified.

"They were shocked to hear that a reporter was seeking information and they have no comment. They definitely don't want to participate because of privacy and safety concerns," said Babaoglu.

White Refugees, Culture and Assimilation

The following two articles, both from VDare, indicate that citizens in Western countries concerned about immigrants who do not, or refuse to assimilate into their host country's culture, are obviously more open minded to the concept of white refugees; because quite simply white refugees, share so many common cultural traits, that assimilation is not a problem.

The first is a letter from an Genuine Afrikaner Refugee in exile, in response to a previous letter of complaint by someone who thought that all refugees were economic refugees, wherein he clarifies his reasons were as a result of crime, and the lack of a foreseeable future for his family in South Africa. The subsequent post, is a follow up, exploring briefly issues of white guilt, immigration and the fear of being labeled a 'racist', including the 2006 US Supreme Court ruling that overruled the 9th Circuit, which had given refugee status to White South Africans who had faced threats from local blacks.

March 2004: SA 'White Family' get US Asylum

This SA Refugee/Asylum story is from March 2004, about a family who were granted Asylum in the US, who felt unsafe as a 'white family' in South Africa.

The following month, another white South African couple, the Gormleys, were denied asylum status, by a US Federal Appeals Court, because in this case the Judges did not conclude that the couple's fears of crime and lack of employment opportunities, based upon their race, amounted to persecution.

Do white South Africans perceive themselves to be victims of [persecution] because of their race (white South African)?

It turns out that hundreds of South Africans have already been granted asylum over the past few years, yet none has caused such an uproar as Huntley. Could it be that it's because he's white? It's very difficult to come to a different conclusion, in fact.
