White South African refugee claim 'ludicrous' neighbours say

Brandon Huntley, the white South African man who sparked controversy when he was granted refugee status by Canada last week, is a fraud say people from his Cape Town neighbourhood.
Huntley won asylum because, as Johannesburg's Mail & Guardian reported,the immigration and refugee board found “clear and convincing proof” that Huntley was a “victim of his race rather than a victim of criminality” and of an “indifference and inability, or unwillingness, of the government and security forces to protect white South Africans from persecution by African South Africans.”
However, white residents of Mowbray, the Cape Town suburb that Huntley is from, tell the London Times this is not the case.The idea that as a white person in South Africa you have somehow drawn the short straw is ludicrous, when you look at the average white person’s life-style and the opportunities which come their way it is laughable... This guy is a con man,” one man told the paper.
Another white resident who moved his family to Mowbray from the more crime-ridden Johannesburg said:“This guy was feeding off the paranoia people have about crime. He made it up and it fed into people’s perceptions because he wanted to stay there. Crime is an issue, it is everywhere in this country, but whites are not more in danger here from it than blacks or anyone else.”
Frans Cronje, deputy president of human rights group South African Institute of Race Relations, told the Mail and Guardian that white South Africans are generally safer because they can afford to pay for private security and “while South Africa is a very violent society the vast majority of the victims of violent crime are black.”
