MILITARY VETERANS AND THE NEED FOR RECONCILIATION

The 1993 interim Constitution which opened the way to our first universal elections on 27 April 1994 requires that South Africa's "legacy of hatred, fear, guilt and revenge" should henceforth be addressed "on the basis that there is a need for understanding but not for vengeance, a need for reparation but not for retaliation, a need for ubuntu but not for victimisation."

Unfortunately, the spirit of ubuntu is decreasingly evident in the manner in which we deal with the past. The latest assault on national reconciliation has come with last minute revisions to the Military Veterans Bill which is currently before Parliament. The original text of the bill correctly defined veterans as any South African citizens who were involved on all sides of South Africa's ‘Liberation War' from 1960 to 1994; who served in the Union Defence Force before 1961; and who had served in the new South African National Defence Force after 1994.

Then, suddenly at the end of May, the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans decided to excise from the definition of military veterans all those who had served as national servicemen in the SADF and who had served in the old Union Defence Force. As a result, some 600 000 former servicemen who fought in the border wars, World War II and the Korean War would no longer be eligible for veteran benefits. According to the Deputy Minister of Defence conscripts performed a national service and were "not disadvantaged by serving the Defence Force". Responsibility for conscripts finding themselves in destitute circumstances could accordingly "not be blamed on the State".

Jus Sanguinis argue that the TRC was a fraud, because it did not enquire into evidence to show that the ANC (a) did not have a just cause, (b) did not declare war on Apartheid as a last resort, (c) the ANC’s war against apartheid was not declared by proper authority; (d) ANC did not possess right intention, (e) ANC did not have a reasonable chance of success, and (f) ANC did not use proportional force; (g) Post Bellum: ANC are doing all in their power -- including the continuation of their breeding war against whites in South Africa – to facilitate the destruction of Boer-Afrikaner and other minority cultures, some of whom (the Radical Honesty culture) have absolutely no standing whatsoever in SA’s alleged ‘multi-culti’ courtrooms; (h) the ANC repeatedly reneged upon its promises of Amnesty destroying all trust in future political agreements.

21 Years Ago: F.W de Klerk released a ‘Terrorist’; or a ‘Freedom Fighter’?

Guerrilla warfare, as fought by the Boers one century ago, is recognized internationally as the honourable defence by disciplined fighters against a superior, armed enemy. The Boers attacked classical military targets, even though outnumbered most of the time by overwhelming numbers. The so-called 'freedom fighters' of Southern Africa, however, be they Frelimo, Zanu, Swapo or the ANC/Communist Mkonto e Sizwe (MK), very seldom attacked anything resembling a military target, - on the contrary, they specialized in the callous bombing of Wimpy Bars, the cowardly laying of landmines on farm roads, the barbarian 'necklacing' of defenceless township dwellers, and even the brutal torture of their own dissident comrades. What makes these atrocities more despicable is that some of the organizations actually signed the Geneva Protocols, which explicitly forbid this kind of terror and cruel intimidation. Serious students who wish to get an unbiased and balanced picture of the kind of terrorist 'war' fought by terrorist organisations like the ANC/SACP, the PAC and others should read the book The Other Side of the Story by Herman Stadtler, Sigma Press, ISBN 0-620-21100-8.

The Church Street bombing was a car bomb attack on 20 May 1983 by Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the African National Congress, in the South African capital Pretoria. The bombing killed 19 and wounded more than 200, and was one of the largest attacks engaged in by the ANC during its armed struggle against apartheid. The attack consisted of a car bomb set off outside the Nedbank Square building on Church Street at 4:30pm on a Friday. The target was South African Air Force (SAAF) headquarters, but as the bomb was set to go off at the height of rush hour, those killed and wounded included civilians. The bomb went off ten minutes earlier than planned, killing two ANC operatives in the vehicle, Freddie Shangwe and Ezekial Maseko. At least 20 ambulances took the dead and wounded to hospital.

More than two decades after political negotiations were started and the ANC, as well as other revolutionary organisations, ceased the armed struggle, there is still large scale confusion and ignorance regarding the nature of the violence that raged in South Africa from 1960 to 1990.

The TRC, which unquestionably consisted overwhelmingly of ANC-supporters and sympathisers, laid the foundation for a propaganda onslaught in which the SABC and certain members of the media merrily took part.

One example of the manner in which this propaganda campaign was conducted is the Special Assignment program about the conflict of the past, presented by the SABC on 18 November 2008.

This program was presented in such a one-sided and distorted fashion that the Foundation for Equality before the Law found it necessary to lay a complaint with the Independent Broadcasting Complaints Commission. After conducting a trial, they found:

“Taking all these facts into consideration, the Tribunal is of the view that one-sided impressions were created in the programme, which is to the detriment of the security force officers. This does not mean that we are of the opinion that these officers were innocent of any atrocities. They (or some of them) admitted to such atrocities. What we find is that there was not sufficient balance in presenting this particular programme, because a lasting impression is created in the mind of the reasonable viewer, firstly, that the security officers were the only people who committed atrocities during the armed struggle, and, secondly, that they then tried to prevent victims from giving evidence against them at the TRC hearings. In finding thus, it is not our intention to interfere with the editorial prerogative of the presenter. The presenter is free to take a particular angle or line and to emphasize aspects that he or she considers to be more important than others. However, when the presenter is dealing with controversial issues of public importance, he or she should treat all parties involved in the issue fairly, and see to it that balance is obtained in presenting different viewpoints. If this is not done, the broadcast can deteriorate into propaganda, a situation that cannot be allowed in any democracy.”

Examples of this type of propaganda appear in our Media daily and it is sad that certain Afrikaans newspapers, either due to ignorance or because of journalists with dubious motives, often take the lead.

140 of SA’s Academic, Media, Political and Civil Society ‘TRC’ ‘Leaders’ were personally contacted to determine their commitment to the Rule of Law. They were informed that it was assumed that they (a) are Proudly TRC SA leaders who agree that if SA does not value non-violent civil disobedience free speech dissent, it is not a democratic country and (b) if informed of evidence the SA government is legally and politically persecuting a SA citizen; they would wish to express their democratic objections thereto, with at the very least a public comment, that they object.

Not one would provide a comment to object to the SA Government persecution of the RHWR. Not one disputed the RHWR’s persecution: the illegal arrest, detention, obstruction of justice, denial of defence and due process, conviction & sentence for a lawful act; i.e. political & legal persecution.

Pik Botha & FW de Klerk to SA & World: ‘The ANC Lied to Us’

In July 2007, Pik Botha, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who served two years in Former President Nelson Mandela's cabinet, informed South Africans that the ANC goverment is violating the negotiated settlement of 1994 with the manner in which it is currently implementing affirmative action

The Rapport article informed South Africans that if the National Party had known that the ANC would implement Affirmative Action in the manner in which they have done, the National Party would never have agreed to a negotiated settlement.

The current implementation of affirmative action is in conflict with ex-pres. Mandela perspective that whites and blacks need each other. “It comes down to a rejection of Nelson Mandela's basic philosophy.”

Botha and De Klerk intended to inform the ANC of their perspectives.

So in 2008 FW sent of a bunch of letters to Mr. Gwede Mantashe, Secretary General of the ANC, wherein he requested such a meeting with the ANC leadership.

That letter was followed by a subsequent letter on 24 October 2008 and again on 11 November 2008. Furthermore messages were left on the telephone of his secretary to request when we could expect a response to our request.

As of this date, there has never been any response from the ANC leadership to FW letters.
