On 15 June 2013, members of the newly formed Renaissance Party of North America held an occupation demonstration outside South Africa's Toronto Embassy, to "Stop the Genocide of White South Africans."

The demonstration was attended by among others: RPN Executive Council members: RPN President, Mr. Sebastian Ronin; Mr. Chris Creighton, RPN's South Africa Liaison in Toronto; RPN supporters Max Macro; former candidate for MP in Calgary, Mr. Paul Fromm and his assistant: Sheri Zucker, and others. Renaissance Vanguard also have a local South African member from Capetown on their executive council: Mr. Sean Verster.

Mr. Paul Fromm is a radio journalist and former Western Block Party candidate for Calgary Southeast. Mr. Fromm is the editor of the Canadian Immigration Hotline, Canada’s best known immigration critic and is in demands as a lecturer across Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. Here’s how John Osborn, an extraordinary activist and friend, sums up his reasons for doing the work: “As things become increasingly chaotic, I want to make sure some doors remain open. If grizzly bears are still alive in twenty, thirty, and forty years, they may still be alive in fifty. If they’re gone in twenty, they’ll be gone forever.”

But no matter what environmentalists do, our best efforts are insufficient. We’re losing badly, on every front. Those in power are hell-bent on destroying the planet, and most people don’t care.

Elizabeth Kübler-Ross defined the five stages of coming to terms with grief and tragedy as denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and applied it quite successfully to various forms of catastrophic personal loss, such as death of a loved one, sudden end to one's career, and so forth.

Several thinkers, notably James Howard Kunstler and, more recently John Michael Greer, have pointed out that the Kübler-Ross model is also quite terrifyingly accurate in reflecting the process by which society as a whole (or at least the informed and thinking parts of it) is reconciling itself to the inevitability of a discontinuous future, with our institutions and life support systems undermined by a combination of resource depletion, catastrophic climate change, and political impotence. But so far, little has been said specifically about the finer structure of these discontinuities. Instead, there is to be found a continuum of subjective judgments, ranging from "a severe and prolonged recession" (the prediction we most often read in the financial press), to Kunstler's "Long Emergency," to the ever-popular "Collapse of Western Civilization," painted with an ever-wider brush-stroke.

For those of us who have already gone through all of the emotional stages of reconciling ourselves to the prospect of social and economic upheaval, it might be helpful to have a more precise terminology that goes beyond such emotionally charged phrases. Collapse can be conceived of as an orderly, organized retreat rather than a rout.

Introduction

A vision of self-sufficiency in Thailand. Agrarian values and the self-reliance they engender are the hallmarks of real freedom.

When thinking about "solutions" many are quick to cite organizing a protest and taking to the streets. Let's for a moment consider the mechanics of a protest, what it might accomplish, and what it may leave to be desired.

Take Glenn Beck's feckless and disingenuous 2010 "Restoring Honor" event in Washington D.C. It drew thousands of honest, well-intentioned people from all over the United States. Indeed, thousands of people filled up their Fortune 500 made cars with gas from Fortune 500 oil companies, drove countless miles, stopping along the way at Fortune 500 fast food restaurants, stayed at Fortune 500 run hotels, and stocked up on supplies purchased at Fortune 500 Walmart. They slaked their thirst under the hot August sun with cans of Fortune 500 Pepsi and Coke, and at the end of the day, they drove home, paid their Fortune 500 cable subscriptions to watch their Fortune 500 media reports, most likely on News Corporation's Fox News, a Council on Foreign Relations corporate member.

At best, all a protest will lead to, while we are so hopelessly dependent on this system, is a round of musical chairs inside the political arena, with perhaps superficial concessions made to the people. The vector sum however, will still be decidedly in favor of the global corporate-financier oligarchy.

If we understand that the fundamental problem facing not only America, but the entire world, is a global corporate-financier oligarchy that has criminally consolidated their wealth by "liberalizing" their own activities while strangling ours through regulations, taxes, and laws, we should then understand why events like Beck's "Restoring Honor" are not only fruitless, but in fact, counterproductive. We should also realize that any activity we commit ourselves to must be directed at this corporate-financier oligarchy rather than the governments they have co-opted and positioned as buffers between themselves and the masses.

While people understand something is wrong and recognize the necessity to do "something," figuring out what that "something" should be becomes incredibly difficult when so few understand how power really works and how to strip it away from the oligarchs that have criminally consolidated it.

A Petition to the Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works, Mr Robin Carlisle to approve a bicycle trailer to be used on a Public Road has been tenatively approved by the National Minister for Transport and Public Works.

I herewith petition the Minister to authorise in writing, either generally or specifically, the operation on a public road in the Western Cape, of the following Bicycle Trailer (known as a Haulin Colin (www.haulincolin.com) Bike Trailer, as used by ecologically conscious cyclists and small business owners in California, Seattle and elsewhere). I have been informed by Officials at George Motor Vehicle Licensing, that ‘bicycle trailers’ are prohibited by the Road Traffic Act: National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999: Section 330(1)(g). Traffic officials were at a loss to explain the logic of this law, which prohibits the poor and ecologically conscious from using bicycle trailers to transport their business or home produce, which would be a sustainable healthy business and personal transportation alternative with zero carbon dioxide vehicle emissions. Many felt citizens should be given financial incentives to do so.

Mr. MJ Gallant, Senior Manager at Traffic Law Administration, confirmed that the Petition had been approved, pending investigation by the Vehicle Technical Committee (VTC) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), which will, “if successful, enable the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) to compile the technical specifications before the matter can be legislated.”

I read your article -- 'New tendency' the most immediate threat to NDR - Nzimande.

I know some communists; honourable people. Their word is their honour. If they make an agreement, they keep the agreement. I know such capitalists too.

Then I know of people who call themselves communists who live like monarchists, regarding their choice of transport and accommodation. Not only do they live like monarchists, like slaveowners they hand out welfare breeding bribes, instead of welfare education bribes or welfare avoid breeding until you are self-sufficient in committed relationship. They prefer to hand out welfare poverty pimping bribery to the most vulnerable, for the same reason former slave-owners wanted their slaves to breed: more vote-farm poverty stricken cannon fodder slaves on their 'national democratic revolution' slavery plantations!

I know some media journalists who are 'non-racialists' who believe all whites and all blacks should become non-whites and non-blacks, and economic slaves to 'non-racialism' consumers. I also know of capitalists who are not capitalists, but simply corporate fascists.

I also know black honourable persons. I married one. One of the most brutally honest honourable men I know.

I also know white and black schmuck liars. Their word means sweet fuck all. It is impossible to make an agreement with them, cause they have no honour. They are simply liars and thieves. They will say whatever the fuck they think they can get away with to lie to you.

In my culture -- Radical Honesty -- we refuse to bullshit anyone. We tell the truth, honourable to another; our brutal honest criticism. It is the foundation of our social contract. Our culture has no murderers, no rapists, no crime amongst each other, because if we want something, we ask. If we need help, we ask. If we are the source of our problem (breeding children we cannot afford, then our culture confronts us about our behaviour). We have no poverty, and no unwanted children.

My point is that you can call yourself whatever you want; if you don't practice what you preach, your words mean sweet fuck all.

If you practice what you preach, and your word is your honour, and you confront the root causes of problems, then you will find that you can solve any problem; just like a mechanic can solve any problem in your car, by identifying the root cause of it.

Your national democratic revolution has sweet fuck all interest in identifying root causes of problems; and all interest in bullshitting your ignorant slaves on your welfare vote breeding plantation farms, that you are going to give them an economic utiopia, as long as they keep on breeding more poverty stricken voters for your next election, where you can then get yourself a new quadruple zero salary and all the perks that go with it.

Of course when your national democratic revolution does not solve the problems you identify (since you refuse to confront the root causes), then you can just blame 'right wing whitey' again. Re: The National Democratic Revolution. It is my understanding that if white South Africans had known we were going to be forced to live in a national democratic revolution (coerced communist state, the benefits of liberation on the rotting corpses of the settlers, frantz fanon black liberation theology 'forgiveness' (not defined of course)), we would never have handed South Africa to the ANC and Communist party on a platter. Scientists are warning of a potential marine massacre with a mass extinction of sea life akin to the death of the dinosaurs.

A new report says the seas are battling pollutants, overfishing and warming, and warns that without swift action the fight to save species could be lost.

The International Program on the State of the Oceans report brought together coral reef ecologists, toxicologists and fisheries scientists.

And when they compared notes, the result was grim.

Co-author Professor Ove Hoegh Guldberg, who specialises in reef ecosystems, says scientists found "unprecedented warming".

"We're seeing acidification in the ocean and now we're starting to see a drop in oxygen concentration throughout the major part of the ocean," he said.

"Now it's impacting directly on sea life, but the other is that it is a potential early step towards conditions which are associated with so-called mass extinction events."

Professor Guldberg does not want to be alarmist, but says a growing human population is to blame for many of the changes.

He warns the pressure will only increase, with the world's population set to grow by another 3 billion people in the next 30 to 50 years.

Perhaps I am atypical, but I’ve always been hypersensitive to what’s going on around me in the real world. Among my earliest childhood memories are the gas lines that followed the 1973 Arab oil embargo; the event which probably planted the seed that sprouted into awareness of peak oil during my fifth decade on this planet. Despite being just a kid at the time, I was keenly aware that my family’s cars needed that gasoline that was being rationed, and we furthermore needed those cars to do just about everything that was important--from my dad getting to work in the morning, to me getting to school, to my mom going grocery shopping every weekend.

My heightened awareness is likely also the reason why I still have vivid memories of a headline that appeared in our local small town newspaper one day several years after those gas lines had abated. The headline read in stark simplicity: “60 to 90 Years' Supply of Oil Left,” and it really grabbed this thirteen-year-old’s attention. Being a thoughtful youth, I did a quick mental calculation and realized that if the headline was accurate it meant if I was lucky there was a chance I would not live to see the end of the oil age.

Flash forward to middle age, and while researching this article I unearthed a reference to what it was that generated that headline from so many years ago. The Obama administration and the corporate media are concocting an ever-more elaborate and spectacular theater around the “heroic” murder of the CIA intelligence myth/CIA asset Osama bin Laden. Not content to simply to exploit the 9/11 atrocity for political gain, the administration is heaping new layers of lie and cover-up to the original crime.

The desperation is palpable. Just days since the “big announcement”, Obama administration officials have already been forced to backpedal, issuing multiple corrections, adding to the confusion over the location of the killing, whether bin Laden was armed or unarmed, whether there was a “fire fight”, if an alleged wife was involved, the burial at sea, whether to release “graphic photos”, etc. The mainstream corporate media---following approved CIA/White House narratives---is spewing and regurgitating a tidal wave of red herrings that add to the inconsistencies.

Seasoned observers will not be fooled, no matter how many Obama lies, doctored photos, fake footage, lurid new testimonials and CIA pronouncements are pushed forth. As put simply by Paul Craig Roberts:

May 5, 2011, 1400 PST, SEBASTOPOL – I have personally interrogated underage criminal suspects who could lie better than White House Press Secretary Jay Carney. It has been four days since the P.T. Barnum (“There’s a sucker born every minute”) proclamation of the death of Osama bin Laden (OBL). President Obama’s account of the firefight has had zero credibility from the outset and it continues to fray and wear thin as each day passes.

First, bin Laden was shooting. Then he wasn’t. Now, no pictures are going to be released. Ridiculous arguments on CNN, by House members stating that releasing photos would inflame and invite retaliation, flatly contradict what I suspect every grunt who ever earned a Combat Infantry Badge would say:

“Release the damn pictures. Give us some to hand out to the “indigs”. We got our man and that’s a message to anyone who would mess with us…Hoo Ah!”

However, as with 9-11, in order to fully appreciate the stupidity of the Obama Administration’s ploy it is only necessary to focus on one glaring inconsistency. With our focus on this inconsistency, demand an answer to it and bring down a house of cards that is already falling. This approach is essentially the same path I have taken with the War Game exercises that were being conducted on September 11th. The issue that follows is to focus on what to do with this inconsistency.

Imagine, then, that you’re on the proverbial ocean liner at sea, and it’s just hit the proverbial iceberg. Water is rising belowdecks and the deck is beginning to tilt, but nobody has drowned yet. Aware of the danger, you strap on a life preserver and head for the lifeboats. As you leave your stateroom, though, the guy in the stateroom next to yours gives you an incredulous look. "Are you nuts?" he says. "If you leave the ship now, somebody else will just take your cabin, and get all the meals and drinks you’ve paid for!"

Your fellow passenger in the metaphor, like Kay and Monbiot in the real world, has failed to notice a crucial fact about what’s happening: when a situation is unsustainable in the near term, the benefits that might be gained by clinging to it very often come with a prodigious cost, and the costs that have to be paid to abandon it very often come with considerable benefits. It’s far more pleasant to walk down to the cruise ship’s bar, order a couple of dry martinis, and sit there listening to the Muzak, to be sure, than it is to scramble into a lifeboat and huddle there on one of the thwarts as the waves toss you around, the spray soaks you, and the wind chills you to the bone. Two hours later, however, the passenger who went to the bar is a pallid corpse being gently nibbled by fishes, and the passenger who climbed into the lifeboat and put up with the seasickness and the spray is being hauled safely aboard the first freighter that happened to be close enough to answer the distress call.

[..] Now of course the concept of using less of anything is about as popular in contemporary America as garlic aioli at a convention of vampires. Nobody wants to be reminded that using less, so that our grandchildren would have enough, was the road we didn’t take at the end of the Seventies. Still, the road we did take was always destined to be a dead end, and as we move deeper into the first half of the twenty-first century, the end of that road is starting to come into sight. At this point, we’re faced with the prospect of using less energy, not because we choose to do so but because the energy that would be needed to do otherwise isn’t there any more. That’s the problem with living as though there’s no tomorrow, of course: tomorrow inevitably shows up anyway. This late in the game, our remaining options are starkly limited, and most of the proposals you’ll hear these days are simply variations on the theme of chasing business as usual right over the nearest cliff.

[..] I’d like to suggest, in fact, that at this point in the trajectory of industrial civilization, any proposal that doesn’t make using less energy a central strategy simply isn’t serious. It’s hard to think of any dimension of our predicament that can’t be bettered, often dramatically, by using less energy, and even harder to think of any project that will yield significant gains as long as Americans cling to a lifestyle that history is about to relegate to the compost bin. I’d also like to suggest that any proposal that does start out with using less energy should not be taken seriously until and unless the people proposing it actually do use less energy themselves, preferably by adopting the measures they urge on others.

That’s how effective movements for social change happen, after all. Individuals start them by making changes in their own lives; as the number of people making those changes grows, networks emerge to share information, resources, and encouragement; the networks become the frame of a subculture, and as momentum builds, the subculture becomes a movement.

Long after the political uprisings in the Middle East have subsided, many underlying challenges that are not now in the news will remain. Prominent among these are rapid population growth, spreading water shortages, and growing food insecurity.

In some countries grain production is now falling as aquifers – underground water-bearing rocks – are depleted. After the Arab oil-export embargo of the 1970s, the Saudis realised that since they were heavily dependent on imported grain, they were vulnerable to a grain counter-embargo. Using oil-drilling technology, they tapped into an aquifer far below the desert to produce irrigated wheat. In a matter of years, Saudi Arabia was self-sufficient in its principal food staple.

But after more than 20 years of wheat self-sufficiency, the Saudis announced in January 2008 that this aquifer was largely depleted and they would be phasing out wheat production. Between 2007 and 2010, the harvest of nearly 3m tonnes dropped by more than two-thirds. At this rate the Saudis could harvest their last wheat crop in 2012 and then be totally dependent on imported grain to feed their population of nearly 30 million.

In 1950 we could produce 100 barrels of oil using the energy of 1 barrel of oil. So the Energy Returned on Energy Invested (ERoEI) was about 100:1. Today that ratio has fallen below 10:1. Similar low ERoEI can be found for other fossil fuels. The chart below shows the ERoEI for various forms of energy. The highest ROI is in wind and solar. This is where we are seeing double-digit growth.
