Girl (9) mutilated while alive: Woman removed childs vagina with razor blade; Husband removed eyes, ears & fingers; to boost church attendance

[Girl (9) was mutilated while alive] [Second inyanga up for muthi killing] [Inyanga held over girl's slaying] [Taximan 'steals' boy for muthi]:

TOP Gauteng cop Happy Vilankulu has told the Alberton magistrate's court how a 9-year-old girl was pinned down and had her private parts removed while she was still alive.

Vilankulu was testifying in the murder case against Katlehong bishop Monde Tokwe, Nolofefe Magasane, Fundisile Sidumo and Vusi Mofokeng.

The state alleges that Tokwe and his wife Magasane consulted Mofokeng, an inyanga from KwaZulu-Natal, when they started losing church members at their Eden Church. Mofokeng allegedly told them to get human body parts that she would mix with muti to help bring back churchgoers.

"Accused number 2 (Magasane) sat on top of Yonela Skweyiya and removed her vagina using a razor blade. Then the husband used the blade to remove the child's eyes, ears and fingers ..." Vilankulu said.

[Muti Murder of Maanda Sendedza]: “A promising soccer star, Maanda Sendedza, had his private parts and tongue sliced off while still alive. He was found dead and his girlfriend, Nyelisani Sidimela (18), beside him at Makonde-Shadani on 23 October 2005. Her lips were sliced off. Shumani Dzebu (31), Mukondeleli Phosha (54) were found in possession of Maanda Sendedza’s private parts, tongue, cell phone & trousers; & Nyelisani’s lips.”

“Muti murder is defined as a murder in which body parts are removed from a live victim for the sole purpose of using the victim’s body parts medicinally. These body parts are then often mixed with other ingredients or used alone to make a medicine called muti. The victim usually dies as a result of blood loss from the wounds.”

A second Inyanga has been arrested in connection with the murder and mutilation of a 4-year-old girl in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, two years ago.

Gauteng top cop Happy Vilankulu tracked down the inyanga to his home in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

"We found him busy throwing bones and telling people who had come to consult him about their future and other things.

"We arrested him," said Vilankulu.

He said police seized a bottle allegedly containing human blood.

"He was pointed out by the person he allegedly gave muthi.

"We have no doubt that we have got the right person because he was pointed out by the person he was allegedly involved with in the gruesome murder," he said.

Vilankulu, who spoke to Sowetan while driving back from KwaZulu-Natal, said he was happy that he managed to trace the inyanga though he had fled the town in which he allegedly committed the crime.

He said police would take some items found in the house for tests to determine whether they were human body parts.

Last week, Vilankulu arrested another inyanga at a hideout in Mthatha, in Eastern Cape.

The arrest came after a couple, a bishop of the Eden Church and his wife - were arrested in Katlehong on January 18.

Monde Tokwe, 48, and Nolufefe Magasane, 50, of Mandela informal settlement appeared in the Alberton magistrate's court last Thursday.

The four allegedly killed the girl and mutilated her body before it was dumped in an open veld.

Police say the bishop consulted inyangas in a bid to boost the numbers at his church after membership dwindled.

The inyangas allegedly told him to bring human body parts to help him bring back the members.

The case against the couple was postponed to February 23 for a bail application. The inyanga will appear in court soon.

"He has told the police where the girl was killed and how they killed her. Police are happy that all three suspects involved in this gruesome murder have been arrested and they all have confessed that they took part," the source said.

Taximan 'steals' boy for muthi

Oct 18, 2010
Sizwe ka Banzi, Sowetan

A TAXI driver has been arrested for allegedly trying to abduct an 11-year-old boy for muthi purposes at the sprawling Kanana shackland in Gugulethu on Saturday night.

The boy went into a spaza shop at about 10pm with his sister when a Toyota Quantum taxi driver, who was buying from the same shop, sent him to "fetch" his wallet in the taxi.

The driver followed the boy to the taxi and when the youngster was in the vehicle the man climbed in and sped off with him.

The boy's mother, Nokuthula Maweya, said neighbours who saw her boy being whisked away alerted her.

"I could already imagine my boy dead," Maweya said as she consoled her boy.

The police were able to corner the taxi in Lower Crossroads.

The boy was returned unharmed but told his mother that the driver had said a sangoma named Gaba was waiting for his limbs.

"My child is very traumatised by this," she said.

The angry mother said the driver must thank his ancestors that the police were the first to catch him.

"My family is very upset. My brothers are spitting fire, and had they caught him they would be the ones facing the magistrate now."

Gugulethu police spokesperson Captain Elliot Sinyangana said the driver was released on bail and would appear in court on November 21.

He urged parents to be vigilant when sending children to shops at night.

"Our advice is that children should not be sent to shops on their own at night because they can become easy targets," he said.

A revered sangoma, Professor Philip Kubukeli, said those using "human parts" should be arrested and thrown in jail.

"We are totally against the use of human parts by sangomas because it leads to murders and unnecessary deaths," Kubukeli said.

Cops warn of new witchcraft trend

2011-03-23 12:09
News 24

Polokwane - Recently empowered rural people are increasingly being accused of witchcraft by jealous neighbours, sometimes with grave consequences, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

"Now you are a witch because you are driving a 4x4. This is the mentality that people have," said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

Mupala Motopela, 81, and her granddaughter, Cynthia Lemaho, 26, were stoned to death and then set alight by a mob in Maake village outside Tzaneen at the weekend after being accused of witchcraft. Lemaho is survived by two children, aged 2 and 12, who managed to escape unharmed.

Fourth incident

Mulaudzi said this was the fourth incident in villages in Limpopo in the past three months where people were either assaulted or killed after being accused of witchcraft.

"Once people start amassing wealth, getting bigger houses and sending their children to better schools, it means you are engaging yourself in witchcraft.

"People think something is helping you do that [amass wealth] and then they accuse you of witchcraft."

Mulaudzi said this had become a real concern for people wanting to return to their villages after building better lives for themselves.

Many people who earned good money wanted to buy themselves better houses in their villages, but they were afraid of being attacked and accused of witchcraft, he said.

"It has become a challenge to people. It is really disturbing."

Stoned to death

He said the police decided to launch a massive manhunt for those responsible for the killing of Motopela and Lemaho on Sunday. First they were dragged out of the house, before being stoned to death. Their bodies were dragged back into the house and set alight.

"It is nonsensical. We still have a long way to go in educating people."

Worst was, said Muluadzi, those arrested in the Maake murders were all aged between 18 and 25.

"These are the leaders of our future. We expect them to lead a responsible life."

By Wednesday morning, nine people had been arrested.

"This must also serve as a warning to others. Enough is enough. We are not going to allow this thing to happen in the province. They must know, we will hunt them down," said Muluadzi.

"This thing is very depressing. Innocent people are losing their lives."

The death of Maanda Sendeza, a promising soccer star of Makonde Village, uncovered many mysterious cases of ritual murders which remain unsolved.

Article By: Wilson Dzebu, Zoutnet
Date: 16 December 2005

One of the muti murder victims, the late Maanda Sendedza of Makonde. His brutal murder has unveiled more unanswered cases of ritual murders in the Vhembe area.

Many people are losing their lives to ritual murder practices in the Vhembe area. Now the question remains – how many more must die as a result of ritual murder? How many will lose their lives to this barbaric practice in future?

The death of Maanda Sendeza, a promising soccer star of Makonde Village, uncovered many mysterious cases of ritual murders which remain unsolved.

According to the document prepared by the inhabitants of Thengwe, which is in possession of Limpopo Mirror, they want the Thohoyandou Serious Crime Investigating Unit to be deployed in their area, to review the following outstanding alleged ritual murder cases: Mbulaheni Bele of Vuvha Village, Nambeni Netshisaulu (Thengwe), Samson Mukosi, Phanuel Makhado (Lukau), Edward Rambofheni (Lukau), Thidziambi Masevhe (Thengwe), Adziambei Mudzielwana, Wilson Ndou, Phillip Sigodi, Maria Maluta (a female only known as Nyamuneiwa of Thengwe), four children from Mafukani and a 40-year-old male have all been discovered with missing body parts at Mafukani.

The Makonde community urged the police to arrest other known suspects who are also involved in the ritual killing of Maanda Sendedza. They also demanded that the case of the late Goya Rambofheni, who was found hanging from a tree in October 2001, at Makonde, should be reviewed and those who are suspected of murdering him for muti purposes be arrested and charged.

They also demanded that the case of a young girl, Ndidzulafhi Rasalanavho, who was found hanging from a tree in 1997, should be reviewed and the people who were allegedly behind her suspected ritual murder be arrested and charged. They further sent a strong warning to the SAPS to take their demands more seriously, failing which, more mass action would follow.

Four traditional healers have been charged with ritual murder and they are presently in custody. Their bail applications continue in the Thohoyandou and Mutale Magistrate’s courts. They are Shumani Dzebu (31) of Muledzhi, Mukondeleli Phosha (54) of Tshidzini, Tshimomo Munyai of Tshandama and Balanganani Munyai (84) of Khubvi. All are linked to a separate incident, the murder of a 40-year-old man of Mafukani, whose head, legs and ribs were missing. They cooperated with the police and retrieved the missing body parts at Tshidzini, on the banks of the Ngwedi River. Dzebu and Phosha are again implicated in the ritual murder and attempted murder cases, after they were allegedly found in possession of the late Maanda Sendedza’s missing private parts, tongue, clothes and cell phone. They were also allegedly found in possession of the surviving Nyelisani Sidimela’s removed lips.
