Given reporters' penchant for proclaiming to "tell both sides," to render all the news that's fit to print, to answer who? what? where? when? and why?, this leads naturally to the question: Why do reporters avoid the population issue so steadfastly? » » » » How and Why Journalists Avoid the Population-Environment Connection, by T. RE: Notice of Violation of Press Code Principles, by IOL.CO.ZA: Technology: Title: Anti-SA Smear Campaign on Facebook; Date: 17 December 2009; Journalist: Ms. Noelene Barbeau.
On 17 December 2009, at 07:00 hrs, IOL Technology published the following article by Ms. Noelene Barbeau: Anti-SA Smear Campaign on Facebook (PDF), which alleged that the Boycott 2010 World Cup campaign is an ‘anti-SA smear’ campaign.
Ms. Barbeau made no efforts whatsoever to contact the administrator of Boycott 2010 World Cup, to provide Boycott 2010 World Cup with a fair chance to respond; even though Ms. Barbeau had the full cellphone and email details of Boycott 2010 World Cup.
On Mon 12/21/2009 at 20:19, Boycott 2010 World Cup sent Ms. Barbeau, and other individuals referred to in Ms. Barbeau’s article, an Open Letter of Response, dated 18 December 2009, titled: Subject: Boycott 2010 World Cup Campaign (www.boycott-2010-world-cup.co.nr) article on IOL: Technology, titled Anti-SA Smear Campaign on Facebook, 17 December 2009. A transparent copy of the entire 18 December 2009 letter to Ms. Barbeau, and IOL Technology Legal Department, is available at: Pro-SA “Boycott 2010 World Cup” Campaign on Facebook (PDF)
The letter provided Ms. Barbeau and IOL Technology with Boycott 2010 World Cup’s Official Response. Ms. Barbeau had ignored the Press Code and Legal Precedent which requires that subjects of stories be given a fair chance to respond, prior to publication.
As of 27 December 2009, neither IOL Technology, nor Ms. Barbeau have honourably informed their readers, with any update at the IOL Technology article, that Ms. Barbeau and IOL Technology Legal Department had received an official written response to the allegations in IOL Technology’s article.
Ms. Barbeau’s article violated the following Press Code of Conduct Principles:
- Report the news truthfully, accurately and fairly;
- Presents news in context and in a balanced manner, without any intentional or negligent departure from the facts, whether by Distortion, exaggeration or misrepresentation; Material omissions; or Summarisation;
- To seek the views of the subject of serious critical reportage in advance of publication;
- To make amends for publishing information or comment that is found to be inaccurate by printing, promptly and with appropriate prominence, a retraction, correction or explanation;
- A publication is justified in strongly advocating its own views on controversial topics provided that it treats its readers fairly by:
- Making fact and opinion clearly distinguishable;
- Not misrepresenting or suppressing relevant facts;
- Not distorting the facts in text or headlines.
- Comment by the press shall be presented in such manner that it appears clearly that it is comment, and shall be made on facts truly stated or fairly indicated and referred to.
- Comment by the press shall be an honest expression of opinion, without malice or dishonest motives, and shall take fair account of all available facts which are material to the matter commented upon.
- Headlines shall give a reasonable reflection of the contents of the report in question.
Ms. Barbeau was honourably provided with the opportunity to make further enquiries and investigation into the information provided to her, by Boycott 2010 World Cup, in the Pro-SA “Boycott 2010 World Cup” Campaign on Facebook and to subsequent thereto, to make amends for publishing information and comment that was inaccurate, by printing, promptly and with appropriate prominence, a retraction, correction or explanation, by no later than 18 January 2010.
Until that date, Ms. Barbeau had been provided with Boycott 2010 World Cup’s Official Response, to Ms. Barbeau’s 17 December 2009 IOL Technology article. However Ms. Barbeau and IOL Technology have not updated their article to reflect their receipt of Boycott 2010 World Cup’s Official Response to their allegations, which Ms. Barbeau failed to request, in accordance with Press Code requirements, prior to publication of her article.
Ms. Barbeau is hereby requested to update her IOL Technology article, with notice of her receipt of Boycott 2010 World Cup’s Official response to her allegations, until IOL Technology make amends for publishing incorrect and inaccurate information and commentary; or alternatively if IOL Technology intend to refuse to publish any retractions or corrections; to inform Boycott 2010 World Cup, of their written reasons for such refusal.
Respectfully Submitted,
