More Journalists Wondering: “Is the 2010 World Cup a Disaster in the Making?”

Danny Jordaan, Chairman of the 2010 Local Organizing Committee appears to think that purely because he has given his Teflon Safety and Security Guarantee, that all Security and Safety shall be fine at the 2010 World Cup; everyone should simply take his word as gospel, from Mt. Sinai.

But it appears that the Huffington Post forgot the ANC rule, that all liberals are to blindly and obediently accord any individual from the ANC's pronouncements as, well, gospel from Mt. Sinai.

As you probably know, the World Cup is scheduled for South Africa in June of this year. Many present and former residents see this as a potential recipe for disaster, and for good reason. Most would agree that three of the major venues, Johannesburg, Durban, and Capetown are cities where lawless mobs run rampant and threaten both classes on a regular daily basis.......

If this anecdote is hard to stomach, imagine the number of potentially explosive situations just waiting to materialize when money-spending foreigners from all corners of the earth convene in South Africa this summer. While this is but one isolated incident, the probability that naive foreigners will put themselves in harm's way is fairly high.

Clearly, soccer...or football (as it is known outside of the U.S.) fans worldwide need to know the risks that they run in trying to have a safe trip to the Cup matches. Does this really sound like a place to stage the most watched sporting event in the world? It wasn't even a safe place for Sheldie Cohen to watch his son's soccer practice.

The French and Belgian governments are incensed at how the South African Police Services botched investigations into the gang rape of a French tourist and an attack on her Belgian boyfriend, the Belgian Swimming Coach, on the Durban beachfront, during the International Paralympic Committee Swimming World Championships, in December 2006.
[Pro-SA Boycott 2010 World Cup Campaign on Facebook]

Meanwhile ETV decided to contact two criminals known to them, who informed the SAPS on live television, of their intentions to rob and murder naive and gullible tourists visiting for the 2010 World Cup.

The interviewed criminals have also learned the New South Africa PC lingo. They justified their robbing and murdering intentions, as repayment to colonialists (read: Europeans). Considering that 142 Academics, and the ANC elite deny that black criminals have any 'racial motivations' in regards to their criminal acts against whites, it should be interesting to hear how the ANC and liberals respond. I am unaware of any black colonialists who brought loin cloth Africans yet to invent the wheel or the written word, the colonialist gifts of the written word, medicine, literature, legal systems, etc. Clearly few Africans appear happy or thankful for these European colonialist gifts of civilization.

While the South African media may be pummelled into fear and obedience by Danny Jordaan, Martin Samuel of the Daily Mail is not similarly intimidated:

If Jordaan is wrong, however, there will be some who will make a literally fatal mistake by coming here in the summer. And Jordaan was mistaken - fatally so - about safety issues in Angola at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The chief executive officer of the 2010 World Cup was among those who assessed Angola on behalf of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 2006 and pronounced it safe.

Following the attempted assassination of the national team of Togo in disputed Cabinda province last week, this gives him a credibility problem when he makes similar pronouncements about security in his own country. Jordaan is between a rock and a hard place.

Could The 2010 World Cup Be A Disaster In the Making?

Jeffrey Hoffman, HuffingtonPost

“In the last 15 years, over 45 000 Afrikaners have been murdered and over 90 000 Afrikaner women have been raped. How can a you have a World Cup Soccer event in a country where one of its minority groups are being exterminated?” asks Bittereinder Boer, at his Boycott 2010 World Cup South Africa Facebook Cause

As you probably know, the World Cup is scheduled for South Africa in June of this year. Many present and former residents see this as a potential recipe for disaster, and for good reason. Most would agree that three of the major venues, Johannesburg, Durban, and Capetown are cities where lawless mobs run rampant and threaten both classes on a regular daily basis. If you Google the Johannesburg Times, you will be shocked to find numerous stories every day about all different kinds of good and decent individuals, whose lives have been tragically cut short by crazed lunatics who never ever know their victims...and sadly, never will.

Consider one of these many tragedies, former Johannesburg businessman Sheldon "Sheldie" Cohen [PDF], shot dead in 2008, while waiting for his 16-year-old son, Noah, to finish soccer practice.

Cohen, the former chief executive of Amalgamated Appliances and a Harvard Business School graduate, was murdered around 8pm outside the Balfour Alexandra Football Club, in Highlands North. He was talking to his father, Jack, on his cellphone when fatally shot in the neck. Realizing something was horribly wrong, Jack leapt into his car and raced to the club. Sheldie's killer was one of three men who seconds before had tried to take the cellphone of another parent, Joss Miller who was waiting outside the clubhouse in her car.

Miller told the Times she saw three men loitering around the clubhouse and the parking lot. "They walked past me and stood where Sheldon's car was parked. "One of the guys came to my car, opened my door, slapped me and demanded my cellphone. That's when I ran screaming to the clubhouse. "Then, I heard a gun shot," she said.

Club vice-chairman Jorge Patricio was in the clubhouse when the men attacked Miller. "I was in the office and heard her screams in the parking lot," he said. "Five seconds later I heard a 'pop'." Another parent, John Killos, said everyone heard the shot. So, it seems safe to assume that Cohen's son, Noah, had most likely heard his father's murder take place...truly pathetic, for sure.

“For the World Cup, they give a visa to everybody.” -- Khola, the Ghanaian[Magnet for Immigration: 3 - 6 million Illegal Immigrants in South Africa]

"We went down to the parking lot and, while we were standing there, Jack (Cohen's father) drove in," said Killos. Jack got out of his car and asked where Sheldie was. " We went to his car and saw his body slumped towards the passenger seat," Killos said. Club coach and director Mark Abro said he pulled Cohen towards the driver's seat and realized that he had been shot dead. Abro said: "His body was slumped forward and two of the boys had tried to hold him up so he could breathe." But, tragically, it was all for naught.

Cohen, dead at the scene was described by close friends as a truly special individual...hugely charitable, caring, loving husband and committed to his sons. Devastated, as were many friends all over the globe, Jack Cohen looked "bewildered" and sobbed uncontrollably at his son's house in Melrose North, where angry friends and family gathered later that fateful night.

US has concerns about WC 2010

“.. South Africa was the most dangerous country in the world to work in -- ahead of Iraq and Afghanistan..” -- Securicor CEO Nick Buckles
[Boycott 2010 World Cup @ Facebook]

Americans realise that Africa is not one country, however, crime and security are major concerns for the 2010 World Cup, the US embassy in South Africa says.

"... security situations need to be evaluated on a country by country basis," said US ambassador Donald Gips in a statement issued by the embassy.

This followed concerns over the safety of the cup to be held in South Africa in June due to a terrorist attack on the Togolese soccer team in Angola during the African Cup of Nations.

South African authorities moved to dispel fears saying it was illogical to link the two countries as they were miles apart.

"While crime and security will be major concerns for the World Cup, just as they are for sporting events worldwide, the United States is actively partnering with the South African government to address these concerns," Gips said.

The US government was working closely with the South African government and law enforcement agencies "to ensure appropriate security measures are in place for the World Cup".

That country's law enforcement representatives met regularly to discuss the security of its national team, the security of visiting US nationals and general national and regional safety issues, the statement read.

"The close co-operation between our two governments is a strong foundation for what promises to be a first-rate international sporting event," it said.

It added that the US mission in South Africa was "working intensely" to provide necessary services to Americans attending the soccer extravaganza to ensure their stay in the country was a "safe and enjoyable one".

Calming words of 2010 World Cup chief executive Danny Jordaan could be fatal

By Martin Samuel, Daily Mail.UK
Last updated at 2:05 AM on 16th January 2010

ANC South Africa ‘Communication’ & ‘Work’ Ethic: “‘Come to friendly South Africa’ used to be the tourism slogan. More accurately, the invitation should be to visit what is one of the most deceitful countries extant.” -- William Saunderson-Meyer, Weekend Argus, 12 August 2006

ANC South Africa ‘Safety & Security’ Ethic: “Must we close the courts, sit and twiddle our thumbs and do everything in Africa time to accommodate a national police commissioner who doesn't do his job?” -- Judge Arrie Hattingh, Free State circuit court judge presiding over fatal stabbing case in which a DNA report was still outstanding after 5 months; 29 Aug '06.
[60% of South Africans: ‘Country Better run under Apartheid!’; ANC more corrupt, less trustworthy & less competent...]

Danny Jordaan has been answering the same question for 15 years. It is the one about safety and security in South Africa and the problem is there is absolutely no way of knowing whether his soothing replies are correct.

It could be that a great many people are about to enjoy the thrill of a lifetime in a country that has hosted 147 major sporting events peacefully since 1994.

Speaking at the South African Football Association headquarters yesterday, he could not break ranks and voice what is being whispered privately - that Angola made assurances about security, particularly in Cabinda province, that were not met - because that would provoke a diplomatic war.

Yet, even though the World Cup final venue, Soccer City Stadium in Soweto, made an arresting backdrop for Jordaan's positive message there was a degree of weariness at seeing another man in a suit responding to machine-gun fire with the order to remain calm.

'I was the technical leader of that evaluation team in Angola but it was up to the CAF and the host nation to act on what was contained in the report,' Jordaan blustered.

'Angola is a sovereign country with its own military, its own police. It's nothing to do with us in South Africa. It is like asking England to reflect on the shootings in Espoo, Finland. It would be illogical.

'Terrorism has never happened here. We are answering questions on pure speculation, things that have never taken place. Please, treat us the same. You wouldn't ask the organisers of the London Olympics questions about something that happened elsewhere.

'Instead, ask the England cricket team who are with us now if they are happy, ask South Korea's footballers. We've had Brazil here, Argentina, Germany, Italy, France, Holland, Barcelona, AC Milan, Manchester United. Nothing happened. But we'll always be vigilant.'

In that respect, he is right. Tying the South Africa World Cup to a localised act of terror in an Angolan exclave is tenuous. To dismiss the potential for the odd appalling event here, however, is simple denial.

South Africa remains cursed by random acts of violent crime, and the problem is that nobody, not even Jordaan for all his optimism, can know if that will become an issue at the World Cup.

Take the journey to Soweto yesterday. On the highway we sat at traffic lights beside a young white guy in a brand new BMW convertible. The top was down, the purchase so recent the number plate was written on card lodged on the dashboard.

The driver was smartly dressed in a suit and jet black shades. He looked a little like Tom Cruise's yuppie in the film Rain Man. And he showed no fear at idling exposed in what we are told is the car-jacking capital of the world.

Mr. Peter Burgstaller, an Austrian Footballer was murdered at the Selbourne Hotel Spa and Golf Estate in KwaZulu Natal, on the eve of the 2010 Soccer World Cup Preliminary Draw in 2006. Soon after landing on South African soil, Mr. Burgstaller teed off on the golf course. A few hours later, a security guard discovered his body on the 12th tee. He had been shot dead and robbed of cash and a cellphone.
[Boycott 2010 World Cup]

One instantly felt rather foolish for believing the scare stories. And then a few miles along the highway, a sign at an otherwise innocuous-looking junction read: 'Be aware intersection under camera surveillance. Incidents will prompt armed response.'

So what do you believe? That moving around Johannesburg is no different to driving in any major city? Or that the simple act of stopping at a red light may be your final decision on earth? And don't say crime exists all over because the message on that billboard was unique in my experience. Everybody has a different story.

The cricket correspondents covering the England tour have made enough routine visits here to find the furore over a single football tournament rather amusing. One colleague estimated he had spent two years of his life working here and had never encountered a problem. He found talk of armed escorts accompanying the football press ludicrous. He hired a car and drove around Johannesburg quite happily.

However, later when, buoyed by this audacity, I expressed a desire to walk the 500 yards or so back from the restaurant to our hotel in a benign suburb, another veteran of winter tours was absolutely insistent the journey should be taken by taxi: and it wasn't the exercise that frightened him.

I have heard stories of a young woman who spent the day on her own on a busy beach in Durban, very noticeably the only white person there, and felt completely safe.

Another conversation, however, brought the lurid revelation that a growing trend is for the victims of burglary to have their eyes gouged to prevent identification. How much is urban myth, how much is paranoia, how much is bravado?

Use common sense and you will be all right is the consensus, but common sense costs money that ordinary fans do not always have: expensive secure hotels, taxis to all destinations, dinner at upmarket restaurants rather than drinks at a downtown bar.

A city of contrasts Judith Chalmers would have called Johannesburg, but she was usually talking about the delights of a European old town versus a wide shot of a new gleaming skyscraper.

The stakes are higher in South Africa. Nobody can afford for Jordaan to be wrong twice.

Mthethwa slams e.tv for 2010 crime report

Staff Reporters,IOL
January 18 2010 at 07:09AM

Between 30 and 40 newspaper clippings were presented as evidence of life in South Africa. “One article exhibited was published in [the Daily Sun in 2004] by Africa Ka Mahamba. [It was] entitled ‘Taking from whites is not a crime’,” Kaplan said. The article quotes the leader of the “Uhuru cultural club” as telling youngsters who attended a Human Rights Day celebration to steal from whites because “it is the right thing to do”.
[IRB Ruling: MA8-04910: Brandon Huntley]

Police have vowed to track down and arrest two criminals who threatened to murder and rob foreigners during this year's World Cup in interviews broadcast on local television channel e.tv.

Lashing out at e.tv, which broadcast the interviews on Friday evening, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa accused the station of "reckless harbouring of criminals".

But group news editor Ben Said claimed it was e.News' duty to inform the public, and Mthethwa was shooting the messenger.

Head of Crime Line Yusuf Abramjee said that as one of the government's partners in the fight against crime, they were equally disturbed.

"We are worried by the utter-ances made by these two self-confessed criminals on a national platform like e.tv.

"These two criminals have tormented police publicly and caused mayhem. They must therefore be brought to book and we appeal to anyone with information to help," he said.

South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) chairman Jovial Rantao said their leadership would only consider the matter today.

The footage had both self-confessed criminals' identities hidden - one with a stocking pulled over his head, the other filmed loading a firearm - and contained comments that they intended to commit armed robberies and murder during the football showpiece in June and July.

They justified their intentions by saying it was repayment for colonial wrongs.

Mthethwa said the men would face charges of contravening the Intimidation Act for their comments which could carry sentences of up to 25 years.

Mthethwa's also said e.tv's "repeated airing of this footage constitutes gratuitous sensationalism, promotes unlawfulness and creates a climate of fear and hysteria".

Said defended the station: "While it is unsettling to hear criminals mock police, it remains a reality that the criminals we spoke to do not seem intimidated by the SAPS and their shoot-to-kill statements."

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele called on e.tv to work with the police by providing the identities and locations of the pair.

"That, in itself, will be a major contribution in their commitment towards a safer South Africa," he said. - Staff Reporters

Your Igonorance about always saying or quoting the wheel is a load of crap,as the wheel was not invented by any Afrikaner, or whiteman

Andrea Muhrrteyn said...

Read the article old man!!

Where did I say that the Afrikaner invented the wheel??

I said Black Africans had not the faintest clue about the wheel, or literature or written word, when the white man arrived in Africa!!

You need to learn to read accurately, before you go about making a doos of yourself, displaying your ignorance so publicly...

Seeker of Truth may be because you are so ignorant... the buddhists believe in fact there is only one evil, and that is ignorance... what does that say about you?

Seeker of Truth said...

What is a fool, think about it

Andrea Muhrrteyn said...

Indeed,

I ask again: Where did I say that 'the afrikaner invented the wheel'?

Or can you not read?

Were Africans running around in loincloths when the white man arrived in Africa?

Were Africans slaughtering each otehr (Shaka slaughtered something like 150 tribes in his Empire building fanatics), when the white man came across Africans after crossing the Fish River?

Did Africans have literature, written language, churches, civilization, when the white man met the African in the Eastern Cape?

Indeed.. think about it! ;-)
